How to Pick a DJ

TIPS ON HIRING YOUR DJ

by Chris Gardner,
Blue Moon Entertainment

Most customers who need a DJ ask the same questions: What do you charge, and what
type of music do you play? Here are a few tips that will guide you through
possible pitfalls that can be overlooked regarding professional DJs.

Sales and Discounts... You Get What You Pay For!
We are having a sale that ends this Friday! Sound familiar? Are you being asked to pay in
full up front to take "advantage" of this "great offer"? What you won't be told is that
there will be another "sale" next week. This forces you into a quick, uninformed
decision by unethical pressure tactics. The reason their rates are really lower is
because they book high volume, pay their DJs less than other companies, and send
out inexperienced DJs!

The DJ Factory - Do You Want To Be Just Another Number?
Some companies will boast of having hundreds of DJs! Beware of this because you may
not get much personal attention, and these companies have very little quality control. Their
"intense training" will consist of having the trainee memorize a script, then asking them
how soon they can begin working! Their focus is on quantity and not quality. Since they
are more concerned about booking as many shows as possible, they hire DJs to fill the slots
even if they are not qualified.

Our "Best" DJs
Why would anyone EVER want anything less than the company's "best" DJ? Be very
cautious of DJ services who package their DJs as "SUPERB" or "DELUXE".
Subjectively classifying some DJs as better or "more popular" than others is
simply a tactic to have you pay more money for those DJs. Don't be suckered
into a preselected "SUPERB" DJ, because the company's idea of "good" may be
drastically different than yours. Conversely, if only a handful of their DJs
are labeled as "SUPERB", just what does that really say about the remaining ones? To
avoid a bait and switch - get the DJs' names and specific references in advance.

So, instead of just asking price and the type of music, look for these vital factors.

Experience, Experience, Experience
Do not risk hiring an inexperienced DJ just to save a few dollars. Usually, the cheapest
means you will get an inexperienced DJ! A polished professional can calmly deal with the
nervous family member, or a crowd that just won't dance, while keeping the event
enjoyable. Also make sure the DJ will be experienced at YOUR type of event. Weddings
and corporate events are very different from the club or high school DJ! Also, don't
be afraid to ask for references.

Your Choice Of Personality
Some events require heavy interaction, while others just need a DJ that will remain in the
background. Most brides and grooms prefer someone in between - a moderate personality
that can act as a master of ceremonies. This type of personality should be your choice. The
best thing to do is tell the company what you want (in writing), then let them schedule
the DJ best suited for you - after all, they know all the strengths and weaknesses of their
own DJs. Then talk to your assigned DJ as your special day gets closer. Communication is
the key. Always be as specific as possible regarding what you want. Words like "fun"
and "good" are very subjective and you may have a different definition of each.

When To Reserve DJ Services
Although it is never too early to reserve a DJ for your wedding, there are recommended
time frames in which to do so. Keep in mind, the peak months sell out the quickest;
so don't be left stranded. Gather all of your information well in advance of your
wedding day in order to make the most informed decision. The following are guidelines
as to when to reserve your DJ:

May, June, September, October, December
8-12 months in advance
April, July, August, November
6-8 months in advance
January, February, March
4-6 months in advance
