Wedding Cake History & Tradition

by Creative Cakes by Carol

The history of the wedding cake began with bread (usually wheat) and was broken over the
head of the bride for years of happiness. Guests would scramble for the crumbs as they were
assumed to be tokens of good luck.

More recently, brides and grooms kissed over groups of little cakes and later, the cakes were
made into one cake with icing over them, thus the tiered wedding cake custom began.

The number of tiers that the bride and groom could reach over for a kiss represented the
number of children that they would have.

For many years the top tier of the cake was frozen and consumed on the first year anniversary,
however today many suggest that the top tier be consumed on the one month anniversary.

Grooms cakes have been a tradition for years. They were mostly used in southern states,
but have become very popular in Colorado (primarily because of our military population
from southern states). The wedding cake is the joy of the bride and the groom’s cake is the
bride’s gift to the groom to honor him with his own special cake. The groom’s cake reflects
the personality or hobbies of the honoree.
